First Foot Forward
First Foot Forward launched in 2013 with a focus on making small batches of textural, thought provoking Yarra Valley wines with minimal intervention.
Winemaker Martin Siebert works with experienced growers from vineyards across the Yarra to make complex, balanced, and most importantly interesting wines at very reasonable prices.
His wines are fermented with wild yeasts before elevage in oak and terracotta eggs. Stylish Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and a hazy pink Pet Nat round out the range. All delicious, and all in demand!
Martin’s “day job” is winemaker and vineyard manager for Tokar Estate, and he previously learnt his craft working in Burgundy with Benjamin Leroux, Pegasus Bay in Canterbury N.Z., and Yarra Yering among others.
94 Points – 2020 Chardonnay “Upper Yarra”
Campbell Mattinson
“Love this. It’s going to mature beautifully over the next few years. It just has that feel, that structure, that length. It tastes of nectarine and meal, chalk, fennel and sweet cedar. It feels fresh, direct and pure but it’s by no means underdone.”
95 points – 2020 Sauvignon Blanc
Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion
“Attention to detail… is what makes this an exceptional wine. It’s pristine and pure, with a line of juicy acidity. Citrussy and savoury, crisp and crunchy. Love it.”
Pinot Noir Yarra Valley

“Excellent release! … both a complex offering and a good one. Sweet cherry-plum flavours meet undergrowth, leafy spice, red currant and brick dust. Tannin is fine and well – threaded and it finishes with a satisfying kick-on of flavour. It’s very good for both quality and value.”
